greenhow report

Round 4 the National Putoline Hare Scramble championship 20th april Greenhow North Yorkshire Hackett storms to Greenhow win The Dirtbike-traxs crew found themselves at another new venue for the 4 round of the national putoline hare scramble championship, the event which was planned for Settle in North Yorkshire had to be changed at short notice so the dirtbike-traxs team employed one of there spare venues Greenhow in North Yorkshire which comprised of 2 large fells with a steep valley running through the middle providing challenging stream crossings accents and descents and the long climb out of the valley bottom towards lap scoring , once again the hard working dirtbike-traxs team had created another interesting course to test the full entry of 250 riders, At 10.30am the quality expert line up were given the start signal David Myers was away in front taking the RAS sport hole shot award and he led the experts on to the fell for the first time , as the leading pack descended from the fell and in to the quarry section containing the long stream bed, it was Andrew Hackett on the sandiford Honda who had taken up the lead, but was being chased hard by some of the north’s best hare scramblers Lincoln Brewster kb racing gas gas Jason Crosland sandiford Honda, the biffster sandiford Honda David Myers ktm and a host of other top experts , by the time the leading experts had reached the valley of hell David Myers was in the lead with Lincoln Brewster and Hackett chasing hard , through the first 3 laps the lead changed with Brewster and Myers taking turns at the front before Andrew Hackett sandiford Honda picked up the pace to pass the leaders meanwhile the biffster not at his best was hoovering his way through the expert class despite suffering poisoning from a suspicious boiled sausage consumed at a wedding the previous day, Andrew Hackett was now on a mission building up a good lead and reveling in the conditions , but he was going to need the lead on the last lap his bike was overheating and he lost several minutes while he cooled it down enough to get going again limping it back to take a well deserved win not realizing he still had a 7 minutes margin over second placed man the biffester, David Myers finished in a fine third place only a minute a drift of the biffster. The expert race had been a hard fought affair with the lead changing many times and provided a great spectacle for the spectators. In the competitive clubman E1 class the team dirtbike-traxs young guns picked up first and third places with Joe Deakin dbt husqvarna taking the win from Ian Harrison both completing 9 laps with Josh Bendall dbt husqvarna in third, the clubman open class was once again won by Dave Wilson on 10 laps with Karl Greenall second and Simon Douglas third, John Burrow won the 040 class from Rob Butler. The sportsman e1 class was won by Davey Morewood from Thomas Healey. In the sportsman open class Richard Spencer was the winner, the senior A youth riders did very well as a class with nearly all the competitors completing the race such is the quality of the dirtbike-traxs youth scene George Knowles was the winner from Reece morewood with William Hilas in third special mention to Jane Daniels who finish 4th and Becca Dawson 6th.both upholding girl power honour It was a hard day for the novice group and well done to all the riders that completed the race with Chris Pickard claiming the win. Talking to the dirtbike-traxs team at the end it was clear that they were pleased with the way the event ran. the event was challenging with plenty of places to pass just a bit to hard for novice riders in places and fears over a shortage of car parking were wrong it is now clear that we could park double the amount of vehicles and employ a 2 race format giving the sportsman riders an easier course .The next round of this popular championship moves to Lancashire and the famous Gisburn track on the may 3/4th bank holiday weekend entries are open for youth and adult with camping over the full weekend. husky march on

MPS Racing Husqvarna ’08 British Enduro Championship – round 1: Muntjac Enduro, 24.2.2008 Husqvarna and Wakely top E2 class at ’08 BEC opener Husky Sport backed MPS Racing Husqvarna team riders Daryl Bolter and Si Wakely got their ’08 British Enduro Championship campaigns underway at the Diss MCC organised Muntjac Enduro on February 24 where both riders performed well at the head of the Championship class. Switching from a 125cc two-stroke to a 250cc four-stroke for ’08 Bolter came agonisingly close to claiming his first ever overall BEC win only to finish fifth at the Diss MCC organised event following a mistake on the third and final test of the day. For Si Wakely the event marked his first in BEC competition mounted on a 450cc four-stroke and following three consistently fast special test performances he placed a deserved second overall as well as topping the Enduro 2 class. Recording the fastest overall times on both the first and second runs through the sandy Muntjac special test Bolter looked to be heading towards his first ever overall BEC win as he took to the start of the third and final test of the day. Close to one second ahead of reigning British champion Tom Sagar on test one, on test two Bolter claimed an even bigger overall winning margin of close to two seconds, but on the decisive third and final test the European Enduro Champion fell and stalled his bike losing valuable time. Unable to start his bike instantly Daryl knew his hopes of winning the event were over and he cruised into the end of the test to claim an eventual fifth place overall result and as runner-up in the Enduro 1 class behind Sagar. Thankfully the opening round of the ’08 BEC series ended on a much more positive note for MPS racing Husqvarna’s Si Wakely. Placing third on both the first and second timed special tests, Wakely held a comfortable lead in the Enduro 2 class going into the third and final test of the day. Placing second in the last test of the event, having at one point momentarily stalled his bike, he finished less than half a second behind eventual event winner Tom Sagar to claim a deserved Enduro 2 class win as well as finishing as the overall runner-up. Rounding off a solid opening round to the ’08 BEC series for the MPS Racing Husqvarna team rider Gavin Houson placed his WR125 at the top of the overall Expert class results where he finished just under one second ahead of Bradley King. Si Wakely: “I had three really good tests and felt I was getting quicker throughout the day. I injured my ankle two weeks before the event and then hit my foot on a tree stump in the first test, which meant I struggled to use the rear brake a little on that test. The rest of the day went really well though. I’m really enjoying riding the 450. Because there was so much traction and the bike has such great power I was able to spend most of the day standing up and riding smooth. I stalled my bike in the last test but I only lost a second or two. All in all it’s been a great event for me. I’m looking forward to round two in Scotland now.” Daryl Bolter: “I can’t explain how disappointed I am. By winning the first two tests and cleaning the going I’d put myself in a strong position to win the event, which would have been my first ever overall BEC win, and then on the last test I made a small mistake, my bike stalled, and that was it. My result went out the window. The first test didn’t go perfectly but I still managed to win that. Then on the second test I again made a few small mistakes and won that. The third and final test started perfectly, I know I was riding faster than on the first two, and then I hit a small hole coming into a corner and fell. It was a stupid little crash but the bike stalled and I couldn’t start it. This year is the first that I’ve raced a four-stroke so I’m not 100 per cent sure how to get the jetting perfect. I think the bike was a little too rich off the bottom and it just wouldn’t start. The bike was great all day but I just couldn’t get it started on that last test

BUTTS IT JUST GETS BUTTER

Butts It just gets butter As English wins Round 1 national Putoline winter hare scramble championship The Dirtbike-traxs team were once again at the famous Butts quarry Derbyshire , the track had undergone significant changes from the june event , with the dirtbike-traxs course engineers including a lot more mx track , plus the traditional Butts routes the quarry wall and the rocky woodland climbs all mixed in to give the Butts circuit its own distinct hare scramble flavour that keeps riders coming back . Although the track was wet in places the area managed to avoid any rain over the weekend which was welcome and with the wind and sunny spells the track dried out well during Sundays racing . After the successful conclusion to the national Putoline hare scramble championship last weekend at Driffield, many riders had moved up into new classes The youth and ladies riders got the days racing under way with 9 am start . the race 90 minutes in duration and immediately we could see during the early stages Davey Todd and Scott Altass were going to be the pair to watch in the senior B class with Davey taking the win from Luke Gorse and in third place was Callum Morewood, Scott Altass retired on the last lap with a broken fuel tap after a crash . Jane Daniels proved unstoppable in the ladies class with a clear win from Gina Bewlay second and Jade Gordon third both jade and gina have improved measurably over this year . Michael Gilby was a new name at the top of the junior class with a fine win from Dan Bewlay and Ryan Cheal’ s hard work at the training schools paid off as he claimed 3rd place. During the hours break the course was altered to included all the adult routes, the water splash with its steep climb out would cause many riders trouble as well as providing the spectators with hours of fun. With a full adult entry and a good line up of experts including the return of Gavin Houson mps racing Husqvarna and a number of local mx aces the stage was set for some great racing. at 11.30 am the start signal was given and the experts and 040 were away, expert Adam Smith team Sandiford crashed on the first corner leaving him last after getting going and into his stride his chain snapped forcing an early retirement. meanwhile Gav Houson quickly got into his stride and into the lead, looking smooth and stylish for an hour, then a small crash resulted in the throttle on the 250 4st husky breaking and forcing him to retire. mx rider Craig English on yz 125 took up the lead and screamed the little machine to victory although on the last lap harry Hillas looked certain to catch him, after making up a 4 minute defecit over the last hour and now hot on Craig’s heels and applying maximum pressure Harry crashed , finishing 10 seconds behind to claim the runners up spot . gary daniels finished in third . in the 040 class Mark Houson dominated the class lapping second placed Ian Shannon , Tom Healey in his first outing as a clubman won comfortably from Chris Ball . while Robert Dawson continued his come back with a sportsman class win. Top lady rider Jane Daniels never seems to run out of energy after winning the ladies class in the early morning race won the senior A class to round of a good day for team Daniels This was a great start to the winter championship, it was good to see new names winning and getting podium positions in the different classes. a big thanks to the riders for supporting the event bearing in mind that we only finished the summer series last week, on a slightly different note this was the first time in years that we did not use the transponder system as it is under going updates and the results were late but normal service will be resumed when we go to Ellington Banks Ripon on the 8/9 November.

KIELDER REPORT

The National Husqvarna 2 day Kielder Enduro

26th/27th July

The Dirtbike-traxs crew headed north to the Kielder forest, the biggest forestry complex in the uk  set in the  Northumberland National Park  to join up with the NXC team, to revive the old Kielder enduro , but with a new flavour  run over 2 days, on good old fashioned enduro going with times that would test the riders, John Kerwin the  Dirtbike–traxs  number 1 always believes that time card enduros should be won on the course and in the event of a tie the special test will decide the best man, and this would be proved to be right with the majority incurring course  penalties

The route took in many famous parts of the kielder forest including Pundershaw, The Bower, Chirden Burn, Bolts Law, all set to test the riders to the maximum .

With a green field start area which provided an excellent camping and parc ferme area the event got under way at 1. 00 pm Saturday afternoon with the championship riders leading the full entry away at minute intervals , Saturdays course was 21 miles around with all classes doing 3 laps except the sportsman who had 2 , in the championship class Daniel field set the fastest special test of the day , but lost 2 minutes on the going after leaving his time card at the test in his tool pack  and having to go back to get it, David Myers and David Wood remained clean on time ,with Myers taking the day 1 win , in the expert class James wood was the first day winner from second placed  Julian Harvey who had made the long trip to  kielder from his Suffolk home , rich Milner the famous Scarborough builder found his old form with a third place in the expert class

.

The clubman class found the going harder with riders loosing time and 8 riders houring out, Karl Greenall took day 1 honours in the clubman E1 class while Darren Cousins the E2 class . the sportsmen found the going hard with a high rate of  retirements  Mark Bell from Barnoldswick was one of the few sportsman that remained clean on time to take the day 1 win

Day two

The hard working teams from Dirtbike-traxs and NXC had switched in the day 2 course comprising of another 8 miles of new  going to add into the first days course making the total distance 29 miles per lap for Sunday , With some overnight rain  just enough to dampen the dusty fire roads during the early part of the day  before the red hot sun got high in the sky  , the first championship riders left the start at 10.00 am with 3 laps and nearly 90 miles to cover , the first lap would take them 75 minutes and they were only just back to the check in time  David Myers won the first test in the championship class, but the fastest rider of the day on the test  was a blast from the past former champion Wayne Westwood  having a rare outing in the expert class , 10 years ago Wayne was the number 1 rider in the north of England championship,

As the championship riders started there third lap David wood on his yz 250 had problems when his clutch cable snapped leaving him to ride the last lap with no clutch, burying his bike in one of kielder’s famous bog the other 2 remaining championship riders Myers and Field dug him out and rode the entire last lap together all taking the same time penalties  at the final check . David Myers took the win from Field with Wood in third

Wayne Westwood easily won the expert class from Julian Harvey with filthy  Rich Milner third , clubman E1  was won by Richard Pearson  while Andy Longden won E 2, the   sportsman class was won by Mathew Ward , David Selkeld once again dominated the over 40 class with another win .

Dirtbike –traxs using there new enduro timing system had the results ready within 30 minutes of the course been closed , quite an achievement considering this was the clubs first venture into time card enduro , the results would have taken a long time to work out manually as nearly every rider  that finished on Sunday incurred time penalties John Kerwin the Dirtbike-traxs chief  said at the end its been a great weekend for the riders, a bit stressful for me with the British experts trial running at Carlisle , I spent  the early  part of Saturday on car parking duties before rushing back for the start of the enduro ,a big thanks must go to Jeni Jones who developed the program for the time controls , but its back to normal next week with the National Putoline hare scramble championship at Gisburn Lancashire see you there .

BEC round3

Crychan Enduro, Wales Round 3 Metzeler British Enduro Championship: The Crychan Enduro has the reputation to be one of the hardest and this year lived up to that reputation and was described by many as the hardest ever, the recent Hafren club WEC round was tough but not quite as demanding as round 3 of the BEC series. Weeks of Rain and Torrential Showers over the race days just made the course one hard slog for all those that could master the conditions, many club riders just pulled out, mainly due to be exhausted. Day 1 was a long day with an expected 3 ½ laps and almost 8 hours riding, but due to the course becoming impassable in places, the day was shortened and the club worked hard to cut out some difficult sections. All the championship riders lost minutes on the check controls, but it was Tom of the small KTM 250 Fourstroke that was the quickest only taking 1 minute penalty. Tom also won all three of the cross country tests to easily take the days win despite his bike not running perfectly with a carburation problem due to water or dirt , in these conditions it was just impossible to consider opening the carb to clean it and also because there was so much water about we had to fit a new airfilter at every check point , so Tom just hard to adapt his riding style to accept the small glitch and rode extremely well. Day 2 and the organisers had made big changes to the circuit and the riders just had 2 laps to complete and 2 special tests, there would be no drama’s on this day, no problems with check control times and even the sun made an appearance between showers. Tom once again won both special tests and took another day win. There is still one round remaining in the BEC series but Tom cannot be beaten for the Title, with 4 day wins and a 2nd position he is now the overall 2008 Metzeler British Enduro Champion for the 2nd time. Results Day 1: Tom sagar D3-Racing KTM 250 EXC-F Edward Jones KTM UK 300 EXC Rob Jones Yamaha YZ 125 Day 2: Tom Sagar D3-Racing KTM 250 EXC-F Paul Edmondson Suzuki RM 250 Edward Jones KTM UK 300 EXC
